Wedding Menu Musts! June 6, 2011

Your wedding day is the most important day of your life.  It is a day you and your loved ones will remember forever.  You will spend hours and hours searching for the perfect dress, venue, guest list, band, and food.  All of which is important, but it is said that food and drinks are the keystone to a good wedding reception.

When choosing the perfect reception menu, there are a few things to decide:

  • The budget and number of people attending- These are very important and are necessary before any planning begins.  Know that receptions at different times throughout the day affect the cost.  Receptions in the late morning or early afternoon will be cheaper than those at night.
  • What kind of meal to serve- If you decide to do a late morning or early afternoon reception, than an assortment of hors d’oeuvers will suffice.  Make sure you have a variety, taking into account vegetarians and food allergies/ restrictions.  If you decide on a sit down reception, then it should be a multi course meal.  Make sure to include an appetizer like a soup and salad, an option of entrees, vegetables, and a nice dessert variety.
  • Alcohol- You need to choose between an open or pay as you go bar.  An open bar will be more expensive and people may drink more than they should.  But a pay as you go bar may seem cheap.  You could also just choose a couple beers and wines to keep at the bar, avoiding the huge assortment and liquor costs.
  • Caterer- When choosing a caterer, the best recommendations are by word of mouth.  Someone you know or just someone you’ve met will give you an honest, unbiased opinion.  Once you choose, make sure to take some friends and family and go sample the food before you order it, so you will not be worried about its outcome

It may seem like a daunting task at first, but make one decision at a time and keep these three rules in mind.

  1. Have options- Take into account people who are vegetarians, have food allergies, and/or have food restrictions.  We want to try to keep everyone happy and enjoying the food.
  2. Simplicity- If people don’t know what the food is, they probably won’t try it.  Keep finger foods simple and easily recognizable.  Just because it is a common hors d’oeuver, does not make it any less tasty.
  3. Clean- Attendants will be in their best clothes.  So avoid messy foods that could spill, gush, or stain clothing.  Also, you don’t want a stain on your dress to ruin this magical day.
